I wouldn't want the responsibility of taking care of the very first E34 M5 wagon, and I think I would feel bad for modifying it. Let some old man take it, I say.

I'd probably want to put on wider wheels/stickier tires, upgrade the brakes and brake lines, put a stiffer suspension under it, add thicker swaybars, add power, etc. While all of those things, in my opinion, would make the car more enjoyable to drive, they would definitely lower the resale value.
Everything is improvable. Even if we're just talking about putting more modern technology on a 20+ year old car.
